My Approach - Theories & Technique

I believe in a holistic approach to therapy addressing, mind, body, and spirit. As an integrative therapist, I realize there is not a “one size fits all” approach to counseling.  Therefore, my goal is to draw on theories and techniques that are tailored to compliment the client’s needs.  The following are therapies I gravitate toward naturally however, I utilize others as well.

  • Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) focuses on changing destructive beliefs and thought patterns that have a negative influence on emotions and behavior.  Pinpointing these negative thought patterns and then replacing them with realistic and objective ones helps change an unhealthy cycle of thinking and behaving.

CBT can help with anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress reactions, mood disorders, eating disorders, panic attacks, personality disorders, relationship problems, low self-esteem, grief and loss, emotional regulation, and phobias.  I spend time explaining the technique and process with my clients. Some CBT techniques I use include relaxation, mindfulness, meditation, journaling, problem-solving, social activities, and goal setting.

  • Attachment Theory

Attachment Theory focuses on bonds and emotional attachments between people.  The first attachment we consider is that with caregivers or parents and how that may influence attachments and relationships later in life.

Uncovering attachment styles can help clients understand themselves, how they cope and the difficulties they may be experiencing in relating and bonding with others.  In therapy, I help clients learn how to address old wounds, discover their needs, become more confident an assertive, gain self-esteem, develop appropriate boundaries, bond and form secure attachments with others.

  • Mindfulness Therapy

Mindfulness therapy focuses on learning how to have a more conscious awareness of one’s thoughts, feelings, emotions, surroundings, and situations that hinder progress.  It involves openness, acceptance, and non-judgement. Mindfulness can be especially helpful in treating anxiety and depression.  In therapy, I help clients develop mindfulness through relaxation, breathing, grounding,  and meditation techniques.

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy

Emotionally Focused therapy incorporates humanistic and systems approaches to therapy.  EFT can be used with individuals, couples, and families.  It focuses on the connection between physical needs and emotional responses and addresses problems in interpersonal relationships.

In therapy, I help clients identify specific concerns in their relationships and what is triggering conflict. As we explore fears, unpleasant feelings, and desires surrounding these conflicts, we find ways to change interaction patterns and develop new ways for communication.
